So it has been a few days since I started my new job. As with starting a new job there are all kinds of things to learn. There is a plethora of new people to meet, things to remember, and processes to master.
You also have to have another nurse by your side (aka your preceptor) to acknowledge you actually know what the hell you are doing. I especially love the look on a patient’s face – the fear sweeps across their face when they think you are a new nurse and then the look of relief that comes when they realize you are an experienced nurse. It makes me want to laugh every time!
And just when you think that things are going to get better because hospital orientation is FINALLY over, you get on the floor and have a big o’ stack of iCAT papers to get signed off on. Please don’t ask me what iCAT stands for – all I know it’s a competency check off list – and it’s the most dreaded thing you have to fill out after starting a new job in a hospital as a nurse.
But alas there is a light at the end of the tunnel…
I know OB is a small world and all but what are the chances of me having already worked with three of these professional ladies before? When I saw their familiar faces again it was so awesome!
Just another day in the life of a OB nurse.
What are your favorite and worst things about starting a new job?
