Going into watching Wonder Woman with my thirteen year old son I didn’t have high expectations even though I had heard it was a really good movie. I know from past experience of watching a slew of male-dominated super hero movies while some of them were entertaining they all left much to be desired. Well I was wrong about Wonder Woman.
This movie is just what we needed. All of us. We need to recognize that the female sex is not weak and is actually far from it. I won’t spoiler it much for you but I think everyone should watch it ESPECIALLY the men and young men out there. We need to stop the madness of misogyny and the abuse we have endured for way too long.
I am quite the sucker for strong-female lead movies. Being a advocate for women’s health, it is something I feel very passionate about. The movie starts with a very strong-willed little girl and this behavior is something we should encourage not admonish.
Watching the fighting scenes was like a dream come true. Let’s face it; women are bad ass! We have voices, we can fight, and on top of it all we give birth! We need to make sure our voices are heard more than ever! Everyday there are old white men out there looking to destroy our choices and control over our own bodies. Become involved! Whether it is teaching your teenage sons the injustices that are brought across women, or writing to your senators, holding public office, or reaching out to your friend who has been abused by her partner – Do something!
We all have the power to do good and I loved how the message of this movie was that love conquers all. We need to be the voices of those who do not have a voice. Nurses do this everyday! We also can not ignore the inhumane treatment of the human race in other places of this world.
I know after reading this you didn’t think I was going to get all political over a girl power movie, but as Diana is told countless times “No” and doesn’t take no for an answer – neither will I. I am an OB nurse and a feminist and care deeply about women and the social injustices of this world. I will not stop.
We all have the power to be Wonder Woman – and with that power comes great responsibility. And take note Hollywood – bring on the super hero women movies!
Some of my favorite Diana Prince / Wonder Woman quotes:
“What I do is not up to you.”
” I will fight, for those who can not fight for themselves.”
“You’re right… But it’s what *I* am going to do!”
“It’s about what you believe. And I believe in love. Only love will truly save the world.”
